What Mantis Motion Labs Is Working to Understand

Mantis Motion Labs research is focused on the safety challenges that affect e-bike, e-scooter, delivery, and urban micro-mobility riders.

Our goal is to identify where riders face the greatest risks, what conditions create the most uncertainty, and how better awareness, product design, and rider-focused technology can help support safer movement.

Key Areas of Focus

Visibility

We study how well riders can be seen by drivers, pedestrians, and other road users, especially at night, in bad weather, and in high-traffic environments.

Rear Awareness

Many riders have limited awareness of what is happening behind them. Mantis Motion Labs is interested in tools and concepts that help riders detect approaching vehicles, movement, and potential threats from the rear.

Road Hazards

Uneven pavement, potholes, debris, poor lighting, construction zones, and blocked bike lanes can all increase rider risk. We want to understand which hazards riders encounter most often.

Crash and Near-Miss Patterns

Not every dangerous moment becomes a reported crash. Near misses can reveal important safety patterns before injuries happen.

Delivery Pressure

Delivery riders often operate under time pressure and unpredictable conditions. We study how delivery work affects riding decisions, route choices, stress, and exposure to danger.

Rider Confidence

Safety is not only about equipment. It is also about how confident riders feel when navigating traffic, sharing roads, signaling, stopping, turning, and reacting to sudden changes.

Product Needs

We use rider feedback to identify what kinds of safety features, accessories, and connected devices may be most useful in real-world riding conditions.
